The Offering
What bench-made actually means
Cut and made in store
The whole arc happens at 146 Yonge Street: chalked, cut, basted, fitted, sewn, pressed, and finished under one roof. You can visit your suit mid-make and watch it become itself.
One tailor's hands
A bench suit is not an output, it is a signed piece of work. Ian MacMillan takes your commission from the first chalk line to the last buttonhole, the way the bench has always worked.
Hand-padded canvas and lapels
The chest canvas and lapels are padded stitch by stitch, by hand, to shape the chest and encourage a natural lapel roll.
Four to five fittings
A bench commission includes 4–5 fittings, beginning with a basted fitting. These appointments let us refine the shape and balance as the garment takes form.
Machine work only where it helps
The sewing machine is used where hands would not make the garment better, which is almost nowhere. Sleeves are set by hand, edges finished by hand, buttonholes cut and sewn by hand.
A pattern kept for life
Your paper pattern lives in our archive. Every future commission starts from a pattern already proven on your body across four fittings.
The Investment
Your bench commission
Bench-made bespoke starts at $5,795. The starting point is fixed and the cloth decides the rest: the same cut in a Vitale Barberis Canonico wool and a Loro Piana cashmere are very different commitments. We review pricing openly at your consultation, before anything is commissioned.

The pattern, drafted from nothing
More than 30 measurements and a close read of how you stand, how you carry a shoulder, how you move. Ian drafts your pattern on paper from scratch. No block, no template, no starting point that belonged to somebody else.

The canvas, padded by hand
Layers of undyed wool canvas and horsehair are cut to your jacket front and padded to it stitch by stitch. This is the part nobody sees and everybody feels: it is why a bench jacket moves with your chest instead of sitting on it.

The basted fitting
Your suit is first assembled in loose white basting thread, deliberately provisional, so it can be taken apart and re-cut. You will try on something that looks unfinished because it is. This is where a bespoke fit is genuinely won.

The finish
Hand-set sleeves, hand-sewn buttonholes including working surgeon cuffs, hand-finished edges, buttons anchored with silk. Then pressed by hand with iron and cloth, shaping the garment one last time.
The Cloth
Your cloth, chosen by hand before a line is chalked
A bench commission deserves the best cloth in the room, and you choose it in person, in daylight, against your own skin. In 2025, Loro Piana and Arbiter jointly invited us to Milano su Misura as the only Canadian tailor, recognising the quality of our bench-made garments.

Questions, Answered
Before your bench commission
What is a bench-made suit?
A bench-made suit is full bespoke in the original sense: one tailor cuts and builds the entire garment by hand at a workbench, rather than the work being split across a factory line or sent offshore. At The London Bespoke Club, bench-made commissions are cut and sewn at 146 Yonge Street by our head tailor, Ian MacMillan, with more than 80 hours of handwork. The garment never leaves the building.
How much does a fully bespoke suit cost in Toronto?
Bench-made bespoke starts at $5,795 at The London Bespoke Club. Cloth decides the rest, so a commission in a robust English worsted and one in Loro Piana cashmere are different investments. For comparison, our semi-bespoke suits start at $1,800 and use the same individual pattern and full canvas construction. We review pricing openly at your first appointment, before anything is commissioned.
How long does a bench-made bespoke suit take?
Four to five months for a first bench commission, across four to five fittings. Returning clients are typically three to four months, since your paper pattern already exists and has been proven on your body. If you are commissioning for a wedding or an event, tell us the date at the first appointment and we will plan the timeline around it.
What is the difference between bench-made and semi-bespoke?
Both start identically: an individual pattern drafted from scratch from your 30+ measurement fit profile, full canvassed construction, and hand-finished details like hand-sewn buttonholes and surgeon cuffs. Bench-made adds the hand: the garment is cut and built entirely in-house by one master tailor, with hand-padded canvas and lapels, hand-set sleeves, 80+ hours of work, and four to five fittings. Semi-bespoke applies the same pattern discipline with precision construction and hand finishing, from $1,800 in about 10 weeks.
Who makes my suit?
Ian MacMillan, our head tailor, by name. He takes a bench commission from the first chalk line to the last buttonhole, one garment at a time. You can meet him, and you are welcome to visit the atelier mid-make and see your suit in progress on the bench.
Do you offer made-to-measure suiting?
No. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing factory pattern to a handful of your measurements, and an adjusted block is still someone else's pattern. Every suit commissioned here is bespoke, drafted from scratch and refined across fittings, whether you choose semi-bespoke or bench-made. We do offer made-to-measure shirting from $250, where the approach genuinely suits the garment.
Is a bench-made suit worth it?
It depends on what matters to you. Semi-bespoke starts at $1,800 and is where most clients begin. Bench-made starts at $5,795 and offers a more involved process, with extensive handwork by Ian at our Toronto atelier. Come in to compare the construction, timeline and feel before deciding.
Not sure this is the tier for you
Most clients begin with semi-bespoke
Semi-bespoke uses the same from-scratch pattern, the same full canvas construction, and the same hand-finished details, at a price that lets you build a wardrobe rather than own one suit. Most clients start there and stay. The bench is here when you want the fullest expression of the craft.
